This IS your Resolution

New Year’s Resolution
As the new year approaches many of you will make the most common resolution of all. The resolution of losing weight and joining a gym. That normally lasts for a few weeks. Then when April approaches gyms and cardio classes fill up with the hope of getting t-shirt, summer dress, bathing suit ready in 60 days. Once the summer hits and the bbqs begin the attitude of ” it is what it is” settles in. Refusing the potato salad, BBQ ribs, and alcoholic beverages is just unheard of. How can one maintain a healthy diet with all this good food around? The weather is too nice outside to be in a gym or cardio class, so the thought process is I will start in September. In September the classes are full again until the weather begins to get cooler and the days end earlier then there are less people coming out. Why is it so hard to maintain your workout in the winter? As the number of students dwindle down to barely nothing, the couches get more comfortable. The weight begins to add back on and so does the frustration. Next the holidays are back. The food is everywhere and you are right back to your same new year’s resolution.

Are you allergic to milk or are you lactose intolerant?

When you have dairy, do you experience the following:

  • Headaches
  • Stomach Cramps
  • Bloating
  • Flatulence
  • Diarrhea

These are just a few symptoms that you can experience after ingesting dairy. The question is, does this happen within minutes or hours?

If you notice them within minutes of ingesting dairy then you are allergic. Your immune system can not tolerate dairy and sees milk protein as an enemy. It makes extra antibodies and reacts with these symptoms.

If within hours after ingesting dairy you get these or other symptoms then you are lactose intolerant. It’s possible to live all of your childhood able to drink milk and now you can’t. As you get older, you may no longer have the lactase enzyme that breaks lactose down. If it doesn’t break down, it stays in the system and acts like a laxative and can cause diarrhea, cramps, etc.

It’s possible to only be allergic to milk. There is a milk protein called whey. Some people can not tolerate whey but can consume dairy that doesn’t have whey in it like hard cheese. Lactose intolerant people may be able to ingest limited amounts of milk and other dairy at a time. Lactase enzyme pills are also available to help aid in digestion. They must be taken prior to ingesting dairy to help avoid the symptoms.
